If there really is such a thing as lounge-core,
Action Plus is it. Ranging from snarly, Cramps-like guitar
instrumentals to power stunt driving soundtracks to Jobim-inspired
bossa, the Action Plus female vocal line-up gives up the corn
and Cheez-Whiz vocals like no one since Nancy Sinatra.
This album isn't the authentic Dean-o,
Ocean's 11 lounge that your parents listened to during
the cocktail portion of their 60's dinner parties. This is original
music by lounge slaves trapped in a highly cynical, pre-millennial
urban funk, as seen in song titles like "Woo Woo Woo Woo
Woo Woo Woo Woo (The Car Alarm Song)" and "Pernod."
The music is good. And these cats know
how to swing. Just when you want to discount Action Plus because
they appear to be taking themselves too seriously, they cut loose
with a chorus like "Bongos 4 Sale."
-JA, Grid Magazine
Imagine the creepy, wobbling siren of a
Star Trek soprano playing Ring Around the Rosy with a
rumbling baritone guitar riff; add some blazing bongo heat and
al dente spaghetti western and you may be getting close.
Action Plus is an original, somewhat dark take on loungy
flavors inspired by the likes of Bacharach, Mancini and Morricone.
If you like Theremin, it's in there.
-Silke Tudor, SF Weekly
Action Plus is a new twist on an often predictable genre. Through the collaboration
of guitar wizard Joe Gore (PJ Harvey, Tom Waits) and singer/sampler/keyboardist
Ursula Blind, Action Plus has attracted hipsters and gearheads
alike.
-Jordan Kurland, San Francisco Examiner
The "Cool CD Cover of the Month" award goes to Action Plus. Now that's a vampire! Love
those exotic tunes too. Hats off to Ursula Blind and Joe Gore
for whipping up some creative (and fun) tracks on the debut.
